Submissions are accepted from September 1 to April 15. For stories and essays, Subtropics pays a flat fee of $1,000 ($500 for a short short). Poets are paid $100 per poem. -----

A CAPPELLA ZOO

Web and print magazine that focuses on magic realism (along with "slipstream and other tendencies to explore reality, perspective & genre." The work they publish "fit various overlapping styles, including absurdist, uncanny, fabulist, cross-genre, experimental, bizarro, modern fairy tale, new weird, surreal, fantastic, etc.  Open reading period will be April 7—May 31. Pays contributor's copy. They also bestow the Apospecimen Award: from each issue, 2-3 works are recognized as especially noteworthy contributions to A cappella Zoo and awarded $50 (short story/play) or $25 (poem/flash fiction).

WHISPERS FROM THE ABYSS
